You have to make two main dishes in this recipe. The first one is to make bondas or lentil balls. The other one is to make mung bean soup. The lentil balls are placed in the piping hot soup and served for breakfast or as snack food.

How to Make Lentil Balls or Bondas:

Soak washed white lentils in water for 5 hours or overnight. Strain them. Grind them, adding a little salt and very little water to get a smooth paste. The batter should have a very thick consistency. Add dry coconut pieces, chopped green chilies, chopped curry leaves, hing powder, and pepper powder. Mix well, and aerate the batter by beating it till it becomes light and increases in volume. Keep aside for 10 minutes.

Heat oil in a deep pan. Wet your fingers. Take a lemon-sized batter and shape it like a ball. Drop into the very hot oil. Make 6-8 such balls at a time, depending on the volume of oil used in the pan. Don't over crowd them. Fry them on high flame, turning occasionally till they become golden brown. Reduce the heat once they are crispy. Remove, and place them on a tissue paper. Repeat the same for making all lentil balls or bondas.

How to Make Split Mung Beans Soup:

Wash de husked split mung beans in water. Take them in a pressure cooker or pot. Add water, chopped tomatoes, and turmeric powder. Cook till 2 whistles and simmer for 3-4 minutes. Turn off the fire. Open the cooker lid once the pressure releases naturally. Mash the contents till it becomes creamy.

Heat some oil in a deep bottomed pan. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. Let them crackle. Add crushed ginger, crushed garlic cloves, slit green chilies, and curry leaves. Saute for a while. Pour cooked mung beans. Let the heat be medium low. Once the mix boils, add crushed pepper powder, salt, lemon juice, grated coconut, and chopped coriander leaves. Mix well and let it boil for a minute. Add a few glasses of water to bring it to soup consistency. Increase the fire and make the soup boil for 3-4 minutes. Turn off the fire. Soup is ready!

How to Serve Bonda Soup:

Place 2-3 lentil balls(bondas) in a soup bowl. Pour three ladle full of piping hot soup on them. You have to break and eat bondas along with the soup. Bonda soup is very delicious and refreshing. Try making them on weekends!

  1. Wash moong dal or split de-husked mung beans. Take them in a pressure cooker or pot. Add 4 glasses of water, chopped tomatoes, and turmeric powder.
  2. Boil the mix. Cover the lid and cook till 2 whistles and simmer for 3 minutes. Turn off the fire.
  3. Open the lid once the pressure releases naturally. Mash the contents.
  4. Heat 2 tea spoon oil or ghee in a deep-bottomed pan. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. Let them crackle. Add crushed ginger, slit green chilies, crushed garlic, hing powder, and curry leaves. Saute for a minute.
  5. Pour mashed mung beans mix. Stir well. Add salt. Once the mix starts boiling, add crushed pepper powder, grated coconut, lemon juice, and chopped coriander leaves. Let the mix boil on low fire for a minute.
  6. Add enough water to make the mix thin or bring it to soup consistency. You may need about 6-7 cups of water. Nicely boil the soup for 2-3 minutes. Check for the taste. Adjust accordingly. Turn off the fire. Now the Mung beans soup is ready!

How to Serve Bonda Soup:

  1. Take a soup bowl. Place 3-4 lentil balls (bondas) in it. Pour 3 cups of piping hot soup on them. You have to eat these bondas along with the soup. That is the awesome way of sipping this soup.
