Mini Hot Dog Recipe

I must first begin by telling you that I don't like hot dogs—but I cannot resist those little mini-hot dogs. There is something about a cute little hot dog on a toothpick. And we all have a natural affinity for dipping.

There are many different recipes out there for these little cocktail hot dogs. I am going to share my favorite; it's based on a recipe I found but I've modified it to suit my taste.

These little doggies would be great for a Super Bowl party or any type of get-together. The recipe is easy to make and fun to eat—which is a winning combination!

3 dozen mini dogs

Ingredients

  • 4 dozen mini hot dogs
  • 3 (16-oz) cans tomato sauce
  • 1 can green chiles
  • 10 green olives, chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, chopped
  • 2 cups natural cheddar cheese, grated
  • 1 tablespoon oregano
  • 1 tablespoon basil
  • 1 tablespoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon red chile pepper powder
  • 1 tablespoon seasoned salt

Instructions

  1. Put the tomato sauce in a large pot.
  2. Chop the garlic and add it to the tomato sauce.
  3. Cook over medium heat for about 30 minutes.
  4. Add the canned green chiles, green olives, and all of the seasonings. Add the mini hot dogs. Simmer for 30 minutes.
  5. Add the cheese and mix in the tomato sauce. Simmer for about 15 minutes
  6. Remove from the stove and transfer to a covered serving dish.

Three Different Sauce Options

We can't talk about mini hot dogs without talking about sauces, right? Here are three different sauces to choose from.

Yield: The following recipes make enough sauce for about two dozen hot dogs. You can double or triple this recipe if you want more sauce.

1. Beer Sauce

  • 1 cup beer
  • 2 cups bottled barbecue sauce
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 lemon, juiced
  • 1 tablespoon each: curry powder, garlic salt, cayenne pepper (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Cook in a large pot at a low temperature for about 1 hour.
  2. Add the hot dogs and continue cooking for 30 minutes.

2. Tomato and Mustard Sauce

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup spicy mustard
  • 2 cups tomato sauce
  • 1/4 cup cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon each: basil, oregano, thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Combine all of the ingredients in a pot and simmer for about 1 hour.
  2. Add the hot dogs and continue cooking for 30 minutes.

3. Bourbon and Tomato Sauce

Ingredients

  • 1 cup bourbon
  • 2 cups tomato sauce
  • 1/4 cup steak sauce
  • 2 garlic cloves, chopped
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Combine all of the ingredients in a pot and simmer for about 1 hour.
  2. Add the hot dogs and continue cooking for 30 minutes.
