An Overview of Making Oregano Leaves Drink

Oregano herbs have a pleasant aroma. You can easily grow them in pots. They have medicinal properties and are loaded with many nutrients. Drinking this oregano beverage has various health benefits. This herb is believed to have anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It is believed that it can help prevent cancer formation in the body. People use oregano to treat colds, bronchitis, muscle pain, bloating, acne, etc.

Making this drink is very easy and quick. This drink is called as "tambuli" in local Kannada language.

How to make oregano beverage:

Saute oregano leaves, cumin seeds, and a few pepper corns in ghee. Then grind them with a table spoon of grated coconut. Add yogurt or buttermilk which is moderately sour. Add salt. Adjust the consistency by adding water. Oregano beverage is ready! Now, let me show the recipe.

Yields: Four cups of oregano leaves drink

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups oregano leaves, washed
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 8 pepper corns
  • 1/4 tsp ghee or oil, ghee or butter preferred
  • 1 1/2 cup curd or yogurt or buttermilk, moderately sour
  • 2 tbsp grated coconut

Step-By-Step Instructions and Images for Making Oregano Leaves Beverage

  1. Wash oregano leaves in water.
  2. Heat ghee/butter in a pan. Throw cumin seeds and pepper corns. Let cumin seeds crackle. Add oregano leaves. Saute till they become soft. It may take about 4-5 minutes. Keep aside for cooling.
  3. Take grated coconut and oregano mix in a mixer grinder. Grind them with some sour curd/yogurt or with water. Get a smooth liquid. Transfer it to a bowl.
  4. Add remaining curd/yogurt and salt. Mix well. Add sufficient water to bring it to drinking consistency. Oregano drink is ready to serve.
  5. Tempering this beverage is optional. If you want to use it only for drinking, no need to add tempering. If you want to use it as a side dish, add the tempering.

How To Make the Tempering:

Heat 1/2 tsp ghee/butter in a small hand pan. Add mustard seeds to it. Let it pop up. Add a few curry leaves. Mix well. This is the tempering. Pour it on the beverage. Mix once.

Important Tips

  • Serve this drink in a glass. Store the remaining beverage in refrigerator. You can drink it chill too.
  • This beverage stays fresh for a day when stored in refrigerator.
