Copycat Dunkin' Donuts Coffee

Dunkin' Donuts coffee is amongst the most convenient, tastiest, and well-known of all coffees across America. Unlike its closest competitor, Starbucks, Dunkin' Donuts boasts lower prices, smoother, mellower coffee (unlike a bolder brew), and a more on-the-go attitude. Their slogan is "America Runs on Dunkin'."

Are you one of the many Americans who rely on this delicious coffee to get them going every day? Bring the great taste of Dunkin' Donuts coffee right into your home with these fresh bags of coffee by the pound, in classic flavors like hazelnut and french vanilla, decaf, and the all-time classic regular coffee. New flavors are also available like the popular Dunkin' Turbo and Dark Roast, both great additions to their coffee lineup. Tips for Buying and Storing the Coffee

  • Buy it by the pound. Buying by the pound can save you a substantial amount of money versus buying directly from the store. Also, there's no wait, you can have several cups for the same price, and you won't have to drink out of a disposable coffee cup. All that, plus you won't have to deal with the long lines, only to find out that your drink is wrong five miles down the road! Make it at home and save yourself the money and the frustration.
  • Check the expiration date. When buying from a store, always check the date first. If you're buying online, you should receive a fresh bag. If you haven't, just contact the seller.
  • The coffee doesn't last forever. The expiration date on the bag will tell you when to throw the coffee away. Not abiding by this date can lead to some pretty awful-tasting coffee.
  • Coffee should be sealed up. Most bags come with a seal on them, but they'll do best when you use a coffee canister in addition to the bag to seal in the freshness.

What Makes DD Coffee Taste So Good?

Dunkin' Donuts coffee is largely an East Coast chain. If you like a smooth, mellow coffee with a lot of fresh flavor, then you'll like Dunkin' Donuts and their varieties of flavored coffee. But how exactly do they acheive that flavor on a bag by bag or pot by pot basis?

What the exact recipe for their beans and roasting process is will never be fully divulged, but we can find out how exactly they get their coffee to taste good in the store.

Dunkin' Donuts Techniques

  • They use BUNN coffee makers. First, they usually use BUNN coffee makers. The carafe is kept clean, and so are the pots.
  • They follow an 18-minute rule. They also have an 18-minute rule for the coffee. Once it has been on the burner for 18 minutes or longer, the pot is dumped out.
  • They heat it to a very high temp. The temperature is also what makes the coffee taste so good. Something about heating it to a very high temperature makes it taste good (when it eventually cools off). The temperature they use is between 196–200°F.
  • They grind it fresh. The coffee is also ground fresh for every single pot. That means you'll be best off using whole beans to replicate the in-store taste. If you're using a flavored coffee, unfortunately, you cannot get the exact same coffee. Stores started using flavor shots to flavor regular and decaf coffee in 2005. Before that, however, stores did brew individual pots of French vanilla, hazelnut, and cinnamon coffees, amongst others. In that regard, the coffee by the pound for flavored coffees might actually be better than the stores.

At-Home Checklist

  • Grind it fresh every time
  • Use clean pots and carafes
  • Keep the coffee off the burner after 15 minutes
  • Brew it hot: to 196–200°F if you can control the temperature
  • Use a medium grind to the coffee, not fine or too course
  • Use filtered tap water or bottled water for the best tasting coffee

Preferred Coffee Brewer

BUNN simply makes great coffee. They're one of the preferred brewers that DD uses in their coffee shops. Just take a peek behind the counter next time you're in line. You'll likely see one of these brewers (maybe not this exact one, but it's probably a BUNN).

Why exactly do they use BUNN?

Versus other coffee makers, BUNN heats their coffee very high. This does contribute to the mellow, smooth taste that Dunkin' Donuts is known for. Heating the coffee at this high of a temperature, which in the stores is around 200°F, will change the taste.

Smaller batches like these 10-cup brewers also tend to taste a little bit better than the high-volume urns.

With your own personal brewer, you'll get to control the taste much better, which is far better than waiting in line twice to get your coffee right.

The Perfect BUNN Coffee Brewer

Ground vs. Whole Bean Coffee

While it might be convenient to buy ground coffee (and in some instances, the only option), whole bean usually is a much tastier alternative. Fresh ground beans smell better and taste better, especially when the beans are new. For the best-tasting coffee, try to use the coffee within two weeks of opening. There's no need to keep your coffee in the freezer because this really won't preserve the freshness (that's a myth that's been around for years). Instead, keep it in a cool, dark place like a cabinet, and use the coffee quickly. Keep it stored inside of a sealed container if you have one. The tighter the seal, the better.

In some instances, ground coffee might actually be a better choice for you, and sometimes the only choice. Many of the flavored coffees now only come ground. If you'd like to get going in a hurry in the morning, ground coffee can save you a lot of time if your machine doesn't have a built-in grinder (which is a cool feature on some coffee makers).
