About the Four Horsemen

There are multiple variations on the Four Horsemen, but when ordered in a bar, you are most likely to get Jim, Jose, Johnnie, and Jack. The drink's name is derived from the fact that the brand names of each ingredient has a male name starting with the same letter. This along with the high alcohol content of the drinks justifies the dramatic name.

Recipe

Right off the bat here is how its made.

Original Four Horsemen

  • 1/4 ounce Jim Beam bourbon
  • 1/4 ounce Jack Daniels whiskey
  • 1/4 ounce Johnnie Walker scotch
  • 1/4 ounce Jose Cuervo gold tequila

Serving instructions

Serve neat (no ice), in a lowball glass.

My Four Horsemen Story

The Four Horsemen has been a favorite of mine ever since my roommate gave one to me as a joke on my 21st birthday. We have been ordering them for each other ever since.

Four Horsemen in a Boat

Adds Grand Mariner to the mix to give the drink an orange tang.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 ounce Jim Beam bourbon
  • 1/4 ounce Jack Daniels whiskey
  • 1/4 ounce Johnnie Walker scotch
  • 1/4 ounce Jose Cuervo gold tequila
  • 1/4 ounce Grand Marnier

Serving Instructions

Combine in a lowball glass and serve neat.

Four Horsemen and Hell Follows

Possibly the strongest drink I have ever had and the alcohol-based equivalent of a ton of bricks.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 ounce Jim Beam bourbon
  • 1/4 ounce Jack Daniels whiskey
  • 1/4 ounce Johnnie Walker scotch
  • 1/4 ounce Jose Cuervo gold tequila
  • 1/4 ounce Everclear

Four Horsemen Go Hunting

Doubles down on the whiskey taste with Wild Turkey.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 ounce Jim Beam bourbon
  • 1/4 ounce Jack Daniels whiskey
  • 1/4 ounce Johnnie Walker scotch
  • 1/4 ounce Jose Cuervo gold tequila
  • 1/4 ounce Wild Turkey

Serving Instructions

Four Horsemen Go to Sea

Adds a bit of spiced rum to offset the Whiskey taste. Whether its successful is up for debate. Still good though.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 ounce Jim Beam bourbon
  • 1/4 ounce Jack Daniels whiskey
  • 1/4 ounce Johnnie Walker scotch
  • 1/4 ounce Jose Cuervo gold tequila
  • 1/4 ounce Captain Morgan

Serving Instructions

Combine in a lowball glass and serve neat.

Three Wise Men

When you only have three out of Four Horsemen, a Three Wise Men is born.

Ingredients

  • 1/3 ounce each of any three of the four original Four Horsemen ingredients you have on hand. Jack, Johnnie, Jim or Jose.

Serving Instructions

Combine in a lowball glass and serve neat.

Four Dudes in a Tub

Most variations of the Four Horsemen add an ingredient to the original recipe. Four Dudes in a Tub is the exception to that, this drink throws the original recipe overboard and starts from scratch.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 ounce Mickey's,
  • 1/4 ounce Olde English 800,
  • 1/4 ounce Saint Ides
  • 1/4 ounce King Cobra.

Serving Instructions

Combine in a lowball glass and serve neat.

Specialty Versions and Cocktails

Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse

The only true cocktail variant of the Four Horsemen.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 ounce Jim Beam bourbon
  • 1/2 ounce Jack Daniels whiskey
  • 1/2 ounce Johnny Walker scotch
  • 1/2 ounce Jose Cuervo gold tequila
  • 1/2 ounce Jagermeister
  • 1 ounce pineapple juice
  • 2 ounces sweet and sour

Serving Instructions

  1. Fill a cocktail shaker half full with ice.
  2. Add the liquor, juice, sweet & sour.
  3. Shake well.
  4. Strain into a highball glass.

Flaming Four Horsemen

  • 1/4 ounce Jim Beam bourbon
  • 1/4 ounce Jack Daniels whiskey
  • 1/4 ounce Johnnie Walker scotch
  • 1/4 ounce Jose Cuervo gold tequila
  • 1/4 ounce Bacardi 151 or Everclear

Serving Instructions

Each part is poured into its own shot glass in a row and then topped with an easily flammable liquor (such as Bacardi 151 or Everclear) poured across all four glasses in a line. Lighting one side should send the flames across all four glasses, which are then blown out and drunk. (Use caution when handling fire)
