What Is Hojicha Tea?

Hojicha is a type of green tea that is unique to Japan. It is made from the stems and leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant, which are roasted to create a unique flavor. Hojicha has a long history in Japan, and it is said to have originated in the city of Kyoto.

The tea was first created in the early 1900s, and it quickly became popular due to its unique flavor. Hojicha is still in demand in Japan today. The Japanese often drink it in the evening to relax.

Like black tea and other forms of green tea, hojicha is made from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant, but unlike other green teas, it is often roasted in a porcelain pot over charcoal. This gives hojicha its characteristic reddish-brown color and nutty flavor. It’s a delightful brew to sip while you’re working or relaxing.

You don’t need to roast your green tea leaves to enjoy this tea; you can buy them pre-roasted. You can find it on a variety of online sites prepackaged.

Caffeine Content of Hojicha Tea

If you’re trying to reduce your caffeine intake, you’re in luck. Hojicha is lower in caffeine than other types of green tea, making it an ideal choice for those who are looking for a more mellow tea-drinking experience. One cup of of this tea contains between 7 and 8 milligrams of caffeine, lower than coffee and most forms of tea. Here’s a comparison:

  • Coffee (brewed): 95 milligrams
  • Black tea: 42 milligrams
  • Cola: 40 milligrams
  • Other forms of green tea: 30 milligrams
  • Hojicha tea: 7 to 8 milligrams

How to Drink Hojicha Tea

To brew the tea, first measure out the desired amount of tea leaves. Hojicha tea is typically brewed with 1 gram of tea leaves per 100 milliliters of water. Next, heat the water to between 80 and 90 degrees Celsius. Then, pour the hot water over the tea leaves and let steep for 30 seconds to 1 minute. After steeping, strain the tea and enjoy its goodness.

You can also add lemon to this tea. Doing so offers some health and nutritional advantages too. For one, lemon is an additional source of vitamin C. Lemon also boosts the absorption of catechins, antioxidants in green tea, so they’re more available to your body. Many people like the extra flavor lemon adds to tea.

Hojicha Tea Is Low in Caffeine

Hojicha tea does contain caffeine—but it's much less caffeine than coffee and other forms of black and green tea. If you’re sensitive to caffeine and still want the health benefits of green tea, it’s a lower-caffeine choice.
