Homemade flaxseed milk

Flaxseeds—or linseeds, as they are also known—are small and flat seeds that are either golden or dark brown. They are loaded with nutrition and have some exceptional health benefits.

In order to consume flaxseeds, they must be roasted and then coarsely ground. This is because their seed coat is very hard, and without grinding the seeds may pass through without being digested completely. The seeds' nutrients are easier to absorb when ground.

This recipe yields a very smooth, creamy and filling milk that will keep you full for quite a while.

  • This recipe uses dairy milk, but if you do not consume dairy milk you can always substitute any type of nut milk (use the same measurement).
  • Also, you can replace the sugar with honey—or skip the sugar altogether. I have used hot milk but you can use cold milk instead. It's entirely up to you.

1 serving

  • 1 1/2 tablespoons flaxseeds, roasted and ground
  • 250 ml milk
  • 1 teaspoon sugar or honey to taste

  1. Grind the flaxseeds by using the pulse button (use only short pulses of a few seconds each). To ensure the ground flaxseed powder remains as dry as possible, scrape the sides of the jar and stir the seeds after each short pulse.
  2. Transfer the flaxseed powder to an airtight bottle and store in the freezer.
  3. To prepare flaxseed milk, put flaxseed powder and sugar in a glass. Pour in hot milk and stir until the sugar dissolves. Enjoy!
