Does Ensure Taste Good?

When my OBGYN told me to start drinking Ensure as a nutritional supplement, I said, "You got it!" Ensure is gluten-free and has 24 essential vitamins and minerals, so why not?

I have family members that drink Ensure and knew they weren't fans of the strawberry or chocolate flavors. My family had also mentioned that off-brands didn't taste very yummy. I went to the store and took a look at my choices. I noticed that you pay more for the nutrition drinks that are pre-made and packaged into individual servings. I purchased a 14 oz can of Vanilla Ensure in powder form. It was about 8 dollars—my least expensive alternative without purchasing a generic brand.

I got home and prepared the vanilla drink with bottled water, took a sip, and immediately spit it into the sink. I'd like to think I'm not a picky person when it comes to food and drink because I'm really not. But I just could not finish or enjoy this beverage not to mention drink it on a regular basis per doctor's orders. So I had to get creative. I needed to discover not just how to make Ensure taste better but how to make Ensure taste good. No offense to the people who make it.

I used some ingredients I had on hand and began experimenting. After making and drinking 2–3 Ensure smoothies every day for 2 months, I have got it down. Here is my final easy smoothie recipe and some tips and tricks I learned along the way.

The first and probably most important trick to masking the flavor of the ensure is freezing it.

I prepare a giant batch of Ensure using bottled water. I do this in my blender so I can effectively stir together large quantities of the powder and water without making a mess. I pour the mixture into ice cube trays and freeze. I do this step every couple of days to keep up my supply of Ensure ice cubes. Since I know I need 5 cubes for each smoothie I make, I can tell when I need to buy more Ensure. This is much easier than looking at the unmixed powder and trying to guess.

What if I don't want to freeze my Ensure?

I tried preparing my smoothie with unfrozen ensure, and it was gross. One time I couldn't wait for the cubes to fully freeze and my impatience was not rewarded because my smoothie still turned out sub-par.

I purchase my fruits fresh from the grocery store, wash them, and freeze them in their own containers. The strawberries and bananas can take a little time to hull and peel, but it makes life easier in the long run. Freeze all of your ingredients except for the juice. Even making a smoothie with fresh, unfrozen bananas doesn't cut it. It comes out less cold and more runny. The good news is that berries and bananas lend themselves very nicely to the freezing process. Bananas don't even turn brown in the freezer. Slice them, freeze immediately, and they'll stay gorgeous.

**I love using Ocean Spray cranberry cherry juice for this smoothie. I buy the kind that is 100% juice and has no sugar added.

Ingredients

  • 5 Ensure ice cubes*
  • 4–6 Frozen Strawberries, (4 if large, 6 if smaller)
  • 8 Frozen Blueberries
  • 1/2 Frozen Banana
  • 1/2 cup Cherry Cranberry Juice**

Instructions

  1. Prepare in blender on "Smoothie" setting until fully blended.

Tips for the Perfect Smoothie

  • Prepare Ensure ice cubes in advance
  • Freeze your fruit
  • Don't freeze your juice
  • Rinse out glasses and reusable smoothie straws immediately. Strawberry seeds like to get stuck inside.
