Coke Lite vs. Diet Coke, & Where Can I Buy Coke Lite?

Updated on April 15, 2017

Coca-Cola Lite From Belize

What Is the Difference Between Diet Coke and Coca-Cola Lite?

The difference is the sweetener mix and the availability. Diet Coke is sweetened with Aspartame, while Coke Lite is sweetened with a combination of Sodium Cyclamate, Acesulfame K and Astertame. There is a slight difference in taste, and some people claim a difference in the carbonation. If you are concerned about the content of Aspartame in the Diet version, the Lite version also contains the ingredient.

I do not know where you can purchase Lite in the United States and would love to hear if anyone knows! I like the taste better and enjoy the flavor. You will find Coke Lite in areas of Europe and Central and South America. If you travel to these regions, it is served in a plastic bottle (I have not found it in a glass bottle).

Coca-Cola With Cane Sugar

Are you looking to buy a version made with cane sugar (here in the States it's known as "Mexican Coke")? This is the regular Coca-cola and NOT the classic version normally served in the US. It is not made with high fructose corn syrup. Check out the following places to find this soft drink in glass bottles.

  • Sam's Club
  • Costco
  • Select local privately owned gas stations
  • Grocery stores which specialize in products to service Hispanic customers

During Passover, you can find 2-liter bottles of Coca-Cola with a yellow cap in the grocery stores. The cap will indicate that the product is Kosher and made with cane sugar.

I've had Coke Lite when I've flown Lufthansa and other flights that have had layovers in Germany. I've never seen it in the UK on the shelves, so I'm guessing it is a mainland / German offering.

To me, Coke Lite tastes more like Tab than Diet Coke. You may try Tab (amazingly, it is still sold) as it might be closer to the taste than you're looking for when compared to Diet Coke.

I have been served Coke Light in glass in the EU, and I believe the difference in products is based on the legality of certain ingredients in the different countries. You may be able to try Coke Light at the Coca-Cola plant in Atlanta, but I doubt you can get it commercially. Guess you'll have to take more trips to Mexico.
