Those of us that live alone tend to survive on a diet composed mainly of TV dinners, sandwiches, and takeaway.

Everyone’s different, of course, but I feel it’s a waste of time and effort to prepare a meal for just one individual. If I’m going to pull out the recipe book and put together a curry or a roast, I’m going to cook enough to make it worth my while. This works, but even the tastiest meals lose their charm by the third day.

Sometimes I’ll stuff the leftovers into bags or plastic containers and throw them into the freezer. That also works. I do find, however, that if I store food too long, the taste is a little off. Occasionally the contents even suffer freezer burns.

A friend suggested I pick up a vacuum sealer. She assured me that one of these devices would keep food fresh longer and allow for more convenient storage. I decided to take her advice.

Then flatten the open end of the filled bag over the vacuum channel. The next step is to lower the lid and apply pressure until the unit locks. At this point, the Vac Seal button can be pressed. In less than a minute, the bag will be vacuumed, sealed, and ready for storage.

The Theory Behind Vacuum Sealing

This technique removes most of the air from the packaging, delaying the chemical reactions, triggered by oxygen, that cause food to spoil. Also, because bacteria and mold cannot grow without oxygen, their development is severely constrained.

Vacuum sealing not only prevents food from spoiling, but it also stops fatty materials from becoming rancid. This technique helps prevent freezer stored items from changing color and delays the onslaught of unpleasant odors and slimy films.

Food will not become dehydrated because the tightly clinging bags do not allow moisture to evaporate.

Test Procedure

I prepared a fettuccine Alfredo dish, which included chicken and a generous portion of vegetables. This is one of my tastier recipes. The leftovers were shoved into a bag, vacuumed, and sealed with the Slaouwo sealer.

Because I am a cautious man, I pressed the seal button a second time, ensuring that the bag was completely airtight. Then I unsuccessfully attempted to pull the edges of the package apart.

Three days later, I microwaved my leftovers. The meal, despite its extended stay in the refrigerator, was excellent.

Overall Impression

This device appears to be well built and is equipped with all necessary accessories. It is easy to use and performs quickly. I would recommend the Slaouwo V2 Vacuum Sealer.

Answer: You can purchase, from various merchants, plastic containers with a special air inlet in the lid. Once these are filled with food and the lid secured, the hose can be placed over the air inlet and used to suck out the air.
