How to Make Perfect Hard Boiled Eggs
The main reason why you need to know how to cook hard boiled eggs is to avoid overcooking or undercooking them. It is good to choose the eggs for boiling and these should not be fresh ones. Eggs that are a few days old are the best for boiling and check for cracks on the egg shells. Cracked shells will require you to add some salt to the water which will only act as impurity increasing the boiling point of water. If you are not sure about the age of the eggs, consider getting them a few days before the day you want to boil them. Eggs that are older will be easier to peel when they are ready than fresh eggs. Perfect Hard Boiled Egg
With your boiling pan and eggs ready, you can follow the following steps to hard boil your eggs.
- Place the eggs in the boiling pan and add enough cold water such that all the eggs are immersed in water to ensure the eggs cook evenly. The size of the pot will depend on the number of eggs you are cooking, hence for many eggs, get a bigger pan that will hold all of them. A good pot is also meant to protect the eggs from cracking as they boil from touching one another.
- Turn on the heat and let the water come to a boiling point. Depending on your source of heat, you can regulate the heat so the water boils gradually as this will also help prevent the eggs shells from having cracks. As the water continues boiling, the cracked eggs may split open.
- You can also start by boiling the water then place the eggs onto the boiling water later on although this may make the eggs to crack with the difference in temperature between the egg and the water. You can check the heat of the water to ensure it will not affect the eggs.
- When it is rapidly boiling, turn off the heat and close the lid to let the eggs cook. If you started by boiling the water first, let the eggs cook for some few minutes at a reduced heat before turning off the heat. You may add some salt to the water so it will be much easier peeling the eggs afterwards when you want to use them.
- When you are sure the eggs are cooked, which should take approximately 20 minutes, you can now open the pan. A timer will come in handy here, so you can time when to open the pan and start to cool the eggs. This will help prevent the eggs from toughening which happens when you leave the eggs in the hot water longer than is necessary. Once the timer alerts you, the eggs are ready and the next thing is to cool them before you can enjoy eating them.
- Remove the eggs from the pan and place them in a bowl with cold water for cooling. Alternatively, you can also remove the water by pouring it away and adding cold water to the pan. Remember to cool the eggs immediately to prevent them from forming a green ring around the yolks.
When the eggs are properly cooled, they are ready for eating or storage. If you don’t intend to eat them immediately, you can store them in the refrigerator, but make sure you don’t store them for long. If your eggs are well cooked, peeling them should not be a problem.
