Breaking Bad Marathon Party Cupcakes

Breaking Bad Marathon Party Cupcakes

The Breaking Bad Series on AMC

Breaking Bad is easily one of my all-time favorite television shows. As a total square who has never even tried drugs in my 30 years of existence, I find it all very interesting—but it's more than just a show about drugs. Each character is truly amazing and I have enjoyed watching the rise, fall, and downright evolution of everyday people like you and me. I am very intrigued at how different people react to different situations. How would you react to finding out you had cancer and your time on this earth and with your family was very limited? How would you react if you found out your spouse was a drug manufacturer? These are a couple of the themes in the show. While people can easily argue back and forth about character motivations and do morals and ethics have gray areas when we're talking about life, death, and the people we live and die for... One thing is for sure: cupcakes are delicious! So let's, "Get cooking."

My husband and I attended a wedding rehearsal dinner last year that had awesome Breaking Bad cupcakes made by the mother of the bride. Since then, I've seen a variety of versions all over the internet, especially on Pinterest. I hadn't seen any that were inspired by colors or the large role that colors play in the television drama—so I decided to change that! I give you Walter White cupcakes with Jesse Pinkman frosting and Blue Sky crystals. This entire recipe is from scratch but if you're pressed for time and like the concept, just simply pick up a boxed white cake, pink frosting, and some decorative blue sprinkles.

This Recipe Yields One Dozen Deliciously Bad Cupcakes

Quick word about my butter...

You'll notice the recipes below call for 1/2 cup of butter which equates to one stick. You'll also notice my pictures each show two sticks of butter. What you see pictured are half sticks as that's all my store had last time I was shopping. I actually think they're really cute. ;)

Ingredients for Walter White Cupcakes

  • 1 and 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 egg whites
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 1 and 3/4 teaspoons baking powder

Instructions for Vanilla Cupcakes

  1. Preheat oven to 350° F.
  2. In bowl, cream sugar and soft butter with electric mixer.
  3. Beat egg whites into mixture, one at a time.
  4. Add vanilla and mix well.
  5. Combine flour and baking powder. Add to mixture gradually mixing well. Add milk and mix well.
  6. Fill muffin pan with cupcake liners and distribute batter evenly into 12 liners. Liners should be about 3/4 full.
  7. Bake in 350° F oven for 20-25 minutes. Remove from oven when done and cool completely before frosting.

Baking Cupcakes

Cupcake Frosting

Ingredients for Blue Sky Crystals

  • 1 or more drops blue food coloring

  2. Bring to boil. Reduce to medium-high heat and cook 5-6 minutes stirring often. Mixture should be syrupy.

Breaking Bad Cupcake Tips

  • If you'd like your cupcakes to truly be white, make sure you carefully separate the egg yolks and whites and only use the whites in your cake mix. If you don't mind yellow cake, add the yokes too.
  • Make sure your vanilla cupcakes are completely cool before frosting! The delicious frosting is a buttercream and will melt and drip off even slightly warm cupcakes.

  • If you'd like a pinker color for your frosting, add a little more maraschino cherry juice or a drop of red food coloring.
  • Place your frosting bag in a tall cup while filling it. This makes life easier!

  • I used just one drop of blue for coloring my crystals. Start with one and see what you think. A little can go a long way.
  • If your crystals aren't shattering and breaking they may not be ready yet. Putting them in the fridge can help the syrup to set and harden.
  • Make your crystals the night before if possible. This can save some time and stress.

Heather Says

Making cupcakes and frosting and crystals from scratch can be exhausting but is totally worth it. These three components compliment each other beautifully. The cake is moist and perfectly white. The frosting recipe is one of my favorites because it's deliciously sweet and creamy. The candy glass crystals came out just the way they looked in my imagination. I hope you can give these recipes a try next time you're in the kitchen.

@rebekahELLE-- Thanks so much for stopping back by today! My husband and I started re-watching the show on Netflix. We're in season 3 now and I've been reliving how much I really didn't like Jesse back then-- before he won my heart. I'm sometimes overwhelmed by baking from scratch on some days but these are super easy and sooo worth it. I could make the butter cream and just eat it as is. You'll have to come back and let me know how you liked them :)

rebekahELLE from Tampa Bay on October 16, 2013:

I love this hub! I thought I had commented on it when I first read it. It's simply the best in every way. And I'm a huge fan of the show. When I have the time, I'm definitely going to try making these from scratch. Congrats on the two time win with this hub. I voted for it for Best All Around Hub. :)

Amazing hub and well, well done with good discription and excellent photos!!! I predict it will be very popular!!

Beautiful Garbage from Louisiana on October 10, 2013:

Love it! Might have to make some the simple way though with a box of cake mix and already made Icing lol but I would make the crystal candy stuff the same. I also have a cool Halloween cupcake recipe for Broken Shard Bloody red velvet cupcakes I will be making for a Halloween party. You make the glass candy stuff similar to this to stick in the cupcakes to resemble broken shards of glass.

Suzanne Ridgeway from Dublin, Ireland on October 10, 2013:

Heather (author) from Arizona on October 09, 2013:

@bat115-- That's awesome. I'll be crossing my fingers for your project and hope to see him in it! Thanks for sharing your experience. Now I'm determined to check out that film and look for you and Mr. Pinkman ;P

@NancySnyder-- Hi! You're so awesome for coming back and letting me know. I'm glad the cupcakes were a hit. I've read online (and have seen on baking shows) that making candy glass can be difficult. I'm far from a seasoned expert-- so maybe I have just had a lot of dumb luck when I work with it. I'm happy that you shared your experience here in case anyone else is having a tough time. I need to invest in a candy thermometer myself because I would love to have crystal clear candy like Martha Stewart. Thanks again :)

@purl3agony-- Aw! Thanks! You're too kind . Thanks for stopping by again :)

@kelleyward-- Yay! Thanks! So good to see you. Thanks for the kind words :)

@Rebecca Furtado-- I wonder too!

Tim from Los Angeles, CA on October 08, 2013:

Heather Says - Yes, He is a great actor and I am hoping against hope that I get to work with him soon on a role I have created just for him. I just realized I had another connection to the show as I was an extra in the movie Whatever It Takes that featured a very young Mr Jesse Pinkman. I was an extra in the prom scene... or whatever type of school dance that was. Honestly, I have never seen the movie so I am not sure if I can even be seen in it.

Nancy Snyder from Pennsylvania on October 08, 2013:

Hi Heather, just wanted to let you know that the "Breaking Bad" cupcakes were a big hit at my daughter's b-day party. I did have some difficulty with the sugar crystals. I didn't cook them long enough, and they did not set up. The second time we simmered it longer, and they turned out better, although not the clarity seen in your picture. Regardless they turned out great, and everyone loved them. Thanks for the timely recipe!

Donna Herron from USA on October 08, 2013:

Hi Heather - Congrats on your Hubbie award!! How wonderful! You deserve it!!

@bat115-- That's so awesome! He's such a great actor and after Jesse, Walter Jr. is my favorite character. He tells it like it is and some of my favorite moments in the show are when he is blunt/rude to his parents.

@hlwar-- Thanks so much. Your compliments mean a lot because your cupcakes always look so great ;)

@Michael Durden-- I feel the same way when people go on and on about Dexter or Walking Dead: I feel like I'm the only person who doesn't watch them. Thanks for stopping by :)
