My husband and I are avid coffee drinkers. We used to drink a lot of coffee at coffee shops, and now we love making our own coffee at home.

What Is Affogato?

One of Italy's most delectable dessert drinks, affogato is made by pouring espresso over ice cream. In Italian, affogato means "drowned," referring to the ice cream that has been drowned by espresso. In Italy, the most popular ice cream flavors for this drink are fior di latte and crema, though vanilla and chocolate are also excellent choices. Traditionally, this beverage is enjoyed after lunch or dinner.

My first experience drinking affogato was in Italy. It was a hot summer day, and I stopped at a restaurant looking for something cool and refreshing to drink. The waiter suggested an affogato, which I'd never heard of before. I followed his suggestion and was introduced to the amazing affogato experience. Since that day, this drink has become one of my favorite summertime treats.

A Simple Recipe

All you need to make affogato is a shot of espresso shot and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. If you don't have an espresso machine, don't worry; you can just buy ground instant espresso at the grocery store. Of course, fresh espresso (from an espresso maker) will achieve the best results, but instant espresso also works.

Not many American restaurants or coffee shops have affogato on their menu, but it's easy enough to make at home.

Ingredients

  • 1 to 2 shots espresso (the number of shots is your choice)
  • 1 to 2 scoops vanilla ice cream (I used Tillamook Vanilla Bean)

Note: If you don't have vanilla ice cream, you can use any flavor you like. Good options include chocolate, stracciatella, Nutella, and pistachio. Stracciatella is a variety of gelato that consists of milk-based ice cream filled with fine, irregular shavings of chocolate.

Directions

  1. Brew an espresso (one per person).
  2. Scoop the vanilla ice cream into a serving glass or bowl.
  3. Pour the espresso shots over ice cream (I made two shots).
  4. Serve immediately.

Note: Small drinking glasses are best for serving this dessert. They should be just big enough to hold the ice cream.
