El Canton Firewood Pizzeria in Katy, TX

I live in Houston and have worked as a nurse. I have a lifelong passion for traveling, nature, and photography (preferably all together!).

Unique Firewood Pizza Oven

El Canton Firewood Pizzeria is located in Katy, Texas. Dining patrons can watch their custom pizzas being prepared and then baked in a wood-fired oven that was brought here from Guadalajara, Mexico. The oven weighed in at a whopping 5,000 pounds!

Located near the entrance door, piles of wood surround the pizza oven. Empty pizza boxes are ready to be filled and delivered to customers after their orders are placed. It is fun watching the crusts being rolled out and then dressed with the different toppings.

This restaurant offers both Mexican and Italian cuisine. The decor is also unique with some Polynesian influences. According to what I read on their Facebook page, the restaurant owners took decorative inspiration from some of their past travels to the Pacific Islands. Surfboards are an example.

Groupon Discovery

My husband and I first visited El Canton after obtaining some Groupon coupons. It is a great way to discover and try new places. Because of the unique oven, we ordered pizza on our first visit.

Similar to the complimentary chips and salsa in Mexican restaurants, a basket of seasoned pizza crust is brought to each table. Two different and tasty sauces can be used to top them if desired.

We enjoyed the complimentary basket of pizza crust pieces as we waited for our meal.

Our Favorite Pizza

We both agreed that their Luna Verde pizza is delicious. It is worth a visit to this restaurant if only to get to taste that particular pizza. The hand-rolled crust is covered with pizza sauce, mozzarella cheese, spinach, cream cheese, goat cheese, and swirls of pesto. Yummy! So far, it has remained our favorite of the ones we have tried.

There are many different types of pizza from which to choose, and people can design their own from a list of ingredients. Gluten-free crusts are also available.

Other Options (Besides Pizza)

The hand-breaded squid was good with a spicy marinara sauce as an accompaniment. If overcooked, it can get quite rubbery. The cooks at El Canton fried it to perfection.

The chicken wings were delicious. Buffalo, BBQ, or Spicy Mango Habanero are the choices from which to choose. Ranch dressing is an accompaniment. We had six buffalo wings and six BBQ wings on our order when we first gave them a try.

We ordered the grilled chicken sandwich one time and the grilled fajita sandwich another time. One’s meat choice along with chipotle dressing, sauteed onion, spinach, avocado, tomato, and melted mozzarella cheese is on a crusty ciabatta bun. It is large enough to split between two people, especially with the seasoned wedge sliced french fries that accompany the sandwich.

There is also a selection of salads, wraps, plates of pasta, homemade meatballs, fried buffalo mozzarella, and desserts, which include a delicious sweet pizza and tres leches. A wide variety of drink choices are available.

Karaoke and More

Thus far, it has been way too hot for us to enjoy sitting outside, but the covered patio at El Canton looks inviting. Inside there is a stage where karaoke takes place on Fridays from 9 p.m. to 12 p.m. Music is also performed during the same hours on Saturdays.

There are specials almost every day of the week. Families enjoy knowing that kids under ten, accompanied by adults, get to eat for free on Tuesdays.

I want to live in a world where the need for pizza belittles that of war.
