The Best Dynamite Rolls I've Ever Had

O My Sushi opened in 2015 and has since been a well-received sushi joint. Their bold and bright interior paired with Asian accessories and multiple TV screens gave it an informal, relaxed atmosphere.

My friends and I went for lunch here in the fall of 2019. I ordered the Sushi Lunch B, which comes with nigiri, dynamite rolls and complimentary miso soup. The miso soup was very comforting and very yummy. The shrimp, salmon and tuna nigiri were all very filling and bold in taste. The dynamite rolls were just excellent. They were creamy, well-seasoned and all the components were outstanding. They were the best I have ever had.

The other aspects of the restaurant were also good. The service was friendly, quick and efficient. Their washroom was clean and well-stocked. Although they received a few violations, most were later corrected.

I would definitely recommend O My Sushi. When you do go, I suggest the dynamite rolls as they are amazing.

A Bit of History

O My Sushi is a relatively young Japanese and Korean restaurant. They opened in 2015 in a somewhat obscure, sort of tuck-away location in downtown Kingston. However, they have had many good reviews on Facebook, Google and Yelp.

What jumps out at you when you first enter the restaurant is the bold wall colour. The entire dining room is painted an olive yellow. However, the decor is quite Asian. There are red lanterns handing from the ceiling, bamboo nestled in the corners and Japanese fabric art. There are multiple TV screens throughout the dining room that make this place appear more like a bar.

The tables are a beautiful lighter brown that contrast with the darker black chairs. The place setting is very casual. Disposable chopsticks rest on paper napkins. A soy sauce dish accompanies the utensils. I also noticed that some tables have not been set.

If you look up, there are ceiling tiles that make it look more like an office than a restaurant. Spotlights provide some lighting in addition to natural sunlight from the front windows. The kitchen counter in the back is lit with decorative task lights.

The bold colours will wake you up and the neutral furnishings will make you feel at home. The space has a very relaxed and informal vibe.

The Food

A small group of us visited O My Sushi in November 2019. My friends knew the owners, who were an older couple. They all swam together in the local city-owned pool. The main reason we came to the restaurant was to try it and also support them.

The restaurant has a sizeable menu. While most of my friends got udon, I opted for some real sushi. I got the Sushi Lunch B that comes with 5 pieces of nigiri and 10 pieces of dynamite rolls for $15.95. A complimentary miso soup was also included with my meal.

The miso soup was very pleasant and flavourful. It was warm and very soothing.

I was just a little disappointed that we didn't also get a green salad. Many other sushi places offer complimentary salad and miso soup. However, this was not the case here.

Sushi Lunch B

The nigiri and dynamite rolls were served on a white plate. The nigiri was placed on a green bamboo leaf, if I'm not mistaken, making it stand out from the other rolls. The sushi looked fresh, colourful and very scrumptious.

The sushi included shrimp, salmon and tuna nigiri. They were all very rich and unctuous. I really enjoyed them.

The star of the dish was the dynamite rolls. They were exceptionally good. Very creamy, very rich and nicely seasoned. Everything worked well together. The shrimp tempura, crab meat and avocado were so delectable. This was one of the best dynamite rolls I have ever eaten.

We were served by our pool friend, who is the wife of the co-owner and chef of the restaurant. She was very pleasant and helpful. She answered our questions regarding the menu. The service was quick and efficient. At the end of our meal, she also gave us complimentary persimmons as a dessert. It was a tasty treat!

The Washroom

The state of a restaurant's washroom is often an indication of the cleanliness and upkeep of the establishment. I checked out the washroom at the end of our meal. It was quite clean and well-stocked. I was happy with their facilities.

Health Inspection

The Kingston Public Health Unit regularly inspects the local food facilities and posts their results online. I went on their website to see how this restaurant did on their last inspection. They were last inspected in December 2019. They received three non-critical violations and two repeat violations. I believe these were later corrected. Although they didn't get a clean report, they have since made the necessary changes to comply with health regulations.
