A Bit About Sack O's

Sack O'Subs roots run deep. Beginning in 1946, the Sacco family was crafting sandwiches at the famous White House Sub Shop in Atlantic City. Known for serving celebrities such as Frank Sinatra, "Dr. J" Julius Erving, Johnny Carson, and many more.

The Saccos brought their expertise to the surrounding Jersey shore areas with the founding of Sack O'Subs in 1969 with their first location opening in Ventnor, New Jersey. There are now four locations at the Jersey Shore and one slightly offshore in Absecon, New Jersey.

Sack O's continues to satisfy its many customers with daily specials and side-splitting subs that are carefully handcrafted and served on those famous sub rolls from Formica's Bakery. Locally known as the "Atlantic City Sub Roll," These soft yet chewy delivery vessels are locally unique sandwich rolls from a bakery that has been baking bread since 1919.

Locations

With four locations "down the shore," I chose the fifth location that is considered "offshore" located in Absecon, NJ. I stopped in for lunch on my way home after a wonderful winning morning at the Borgata Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City.

Sack O'Subs is conveniently located in a strip mall at 784 White Horse Pike, Absecon, NJ 08201. It's just outside of Atlantic City and on the way home for many hungry casino goers.

Definitely worth the stop if you happen to be in this part of the state of New Jersey.

What to Expect

Walking through the door immediately transported me back to my childhood and the delis and pizza shops of the 1980s.

I was immediately greeted by the counter staff and quickly offered a menu and a seat. Those shiny red Formica booth seats and fake wood grain tabletops happily invited me in with loads of welcoming nostalgia. Full of retro decor, Sack O's is definitely a throwback to the old-fashioned deli and sandwich shop. This location offers bar-style seating for a few lucky customers directly underneath the huge menu board, "the kind where you stick the individual letters and numbers in to spell out the menu items." Overall the place was spotless and clean with all the booths having been recently wiped down and cleaned.

Sack O's offers an almost overwhelming menu with offerings such as hot and cold subs, cheesesteaks, Italian subs, deli sandwiches, and much more. They also offer traditional sides like french fries, onion rings, and sweet potato fries along with potato salad, macaroni salad, and coleslaw. There are plenty of vegetarian options and salads for health-conscious folks with plenty of delicious choices for everyone.

My Honest Opinion

Anytime I see meatballs on the menu, I almost always have to give them I try. Maybe it's the Italian in me, I really don't know.

I opted for the meatball parmigiana sub on this visit. I wanted to see if Sack O's was making their meatballs in-house or using a frozen store-bought variety. To my delight, my sandwich arrived with four huge oversized, handmade meatballs dripping with homemade tomato gravy like mom used to make. Served on a freshly baked Formica Bakery roll and covered with melted provolone and Parmesan cheese. Magnificent.

If this meatball sandwich is any indication of the quality of the rest of the menu, then friends, we have a winner here. My first bite of this meatball masterpiece was absolute heaven. Those juicy, flavorful meatballs almost certainly made from the traditional beef, pork, and veal were to die for. Specks of parsley were visible throughout the meatballs and provided a freshness that screamed "eat me!" The roll was fresh, soft, and chewy at the same time allowing the meatballs and gravy to safely ride along toward my mouth without bursting through onto the table and ruining an otherwise wonderful day.

With an old-school vibe and delicious handmade menu items, this Sack O'Subs location continues to deliver high-quality sandwiches and sides in a clean, retro, welcoming environment. I suggest you make a beeline for this joint the next time you are in Absecon or near any of the other four locations. You won't be disappointed, I promise.

I couldn't complain about anything on this visit and from my experience, I rate Sack O's and this delicious sandwich 8.9 meatballs out of 10. Definitely a great spot for a quick lunch in a nostalgic little sandwich shop with a lot to offer.
