A Little History on the Modern Milkshake
According to online sources, milkshakes were originally an adult beverage made with whiskey and eggs that became popular around the late 19th century. It wasn't until the turn of the 20th century that ice cream became a major component of this popular drink. When the 1920s rolled around, the blender was invented, making the handcrafted concoction something that could be more easily produced.
Soda fountains, luncheonette counters, and ice cream parlors are all popular places where young people could enjoy a refreshing dessert and socialize.
In more recent decades, milkshakes have become a staple at many restaurants, and it is difficult to find one that doesn't offer at least some variation of this beverage Even trendy places like Starbucks offer their blended coffee drinks that replicate this potion. Milkshakes are something that kids and adults both can enjoy.
So, where can we find the best milkshakes? I decided to sample the shakes at a few popular U.S. chains that are available to most American consumers.

BR (Baskin Robbins
Cold Stone Creamery
1. The Habit
The mocha milkshake at The Habit is a pretty smooth shake with a nice, subtle mocha flavor that isn't overbearing. The shake is smooth—not real ice cream—but it tastes close enough. It is refreshing, filling, and complements the burger and fries.
I find that many mocha-flavored drinks use a heavy powder and sometimes that addition is clogged at the bottom of the glass in a powdery residue. This isn't the case at The Habit. You don't have to worry about any extra stuff at the bottom.
The shake is like a blended coffee drink.
This was one of the better mocha-type shakes I'd had in a while. The downside is that you can still tell the ice cream comes from a machine. It's definitely better than the run-of-the-mill fast food places, but I do have to admit I was a little disappointed since the burgers at this place are much more expensive than you would pay at a regular fast food stop.
Overall, however, I would definitely recommend it.
2. Baskin Robbins (BR)

Baskin Robbins isn't quite a burger place, I understand, but I couldn't leave this one off the list!
One of the downsides of this variety is that it is a bit more expensive than your usual restaurant prices. A bit hefty, in fact.
However, BR, as it is sometimes known in our modern lingo, is known specifically for its ice cream. Over 31 flavors, I should say.
And there is a lot to be said for the real thing. It's a little healthier I'm sure, although I have not done any research on this. And it's a lot more refreshing—at least mine was (I chose chocolate mint).
So if you want something to cool you off and quench your thirst, I would say BR is one of the best bets.
3. Five Guys

Well, I have to say, I was sorely disappointed.
I expected much more from a burger place like Five Guys. This was supposed to be former President Obama's favorite spot. The burgers are supposed to be fresh and juicy, the fries spectacular, and the service amazing.
I didn't try the burgers, just the shake.
I thought the shake was watered down a bit—like the milk machine hadn't finished processing the ice cream. Yes, it came from a machine; it wasn't real. Just a step above McDonald's, if that.
The flavoring was either sparse or not enough. And the texture left a lot to be desired. A shake should have some substance. You should be able to drink it, but it shouldn't be a soup.
Wow. I would honestly pass this one up. Stop at a fast food place next time. It will be cheaper and have a lot more bite to it.

One of the problems you run into with good burger establishments that are as popular as In-N-Out s that these places have to prepare and move food very quickly.
That means the focus is usually on one or two items (burgers and fries) rather than extravagant sides or complex desserts. No hot fudge sundaes here.
The burgers are usually pretty good—although I have to confess that years ago, when In-N-Out were only found in a few California spots—I thought they were much tastier. I think they have cut some corners by thinning out the burgers and adding something to the bun-grilling process.
If there is one thing In-N-Out is known for, it's efficiency. The lines at my local restaurant are so long, that they have to put up a maze in the parking lot so as not to interfere with normal traffic flow. I don't know how other places stay in business.
So all that how are the shakes?
Well, did I mention that the fries are cut fresh from russet potatoes? They also have a double-burger (with cheese or not) as well.
The shake? Well. Let's just say you can get a better one at McDonald's.
5. Cold Stone Creamery

Now I realize this is the second ice cream shop—non-restaurant—I've included here, even though I was supposed to be focusing on burger restaurant shakes. But, so far, most of the restaurants I've encountered have had sub-standard beverages, most made without real ice cream.
Suffice it to say, if you are familiar with Cold Stone Creamery, then you know what to expect. If not, let me assure you it is pretty good as far as ice cream establishments go.
This was a delicious shake. The desserts here are the bomb. Well, maybe not that great, but better than any kind at the burger shacks.
Very good. Recommended.

Wow. What can I say? Any beverage I purchase here is usually pretty good. Even the shakes have a refreshing quality.
The food, well, this isn't a food review. I don't know how "classy" this burger establishment is, but let's just say, as far as fast food is concerned, it's pretty much your basic stapler . . . I mean staple.
Well, the marquee by the parking stall says that the shakes are made from real ice cream. It sure tastes like it. And of course, the fillings are just right and mixed in perfectly. The whipped cream tastes like real old-fashioned, hand-prepared. Not too sweet and just the right creamy texture, and taste.
Overall, this is one of the better shakes.
