Review: Donut Cakes From Allie's Donuts in North Kingstown, RI

My family and I have enjoyed countless delicious Donut Cakes from Allie's Donuts over the years.

Just when you thought you had seen it all, along comes the Donut Cake. What exactly is a Donut Cake? It a very large donut that’s big enough to be a cake, and it’s shaped into pretty much any design that you would like and decorated like a cake.

So where does one find a Donut Cake? None other than Allie’s Donut shop located in North Kingstown, Rhode Island.

I first came across the Donut Cake a few years ago when my sister showed up at a family birthday party with this different but great-looking concoction. Needless to say, it was the talk of the party, and the kids loved it. I had never seen anything quite like it. And to be honest I have not seen this anywhere else in my travels around the country.

If you want your next party cake to be a smashing success, find a way to get your hands on a Donut Cake. Over the last five years, we've had Donut Cakes shaped like soccer balls, baseball gloves, cars, trucks, fish, rainbows, smiley faces, large numbers, and countless other interesting shapes. If you can think of it, Allie’s can probably make it.

As you can see from some of the sample photos included here they can top the Donut Cake with pretty much any kind and color of frosting and sprinkles, and will personalize your Donut Cake with whatever message you wish. They are a great idea for birthdays, holiday celebrations and graduations.

Allie’s is located in North Kingstown, RI, which is in the southern part of the state. As my sister lives nearby she was the one who discovered Allie's and always picked up the Donut Cakes. Because of this, I had never actually been in Allie’s Donut Shop—until this past week, that is.

For my grandson’s third birthday we decided that we were going to order a couple of Donut Cakes. I volunteered to make the two-hour drive to pick them up, as I just had to see for myself what this place was all about.

I can tell you that Allie’s is a very unassuming-looking establishment. From the outside, there is nothing to indicate that this place is special, other than the steady stream of cars that are coming and going from their parking lot.

Once inside, however, you are apt to find yourself waiting in a line, especially if it happens to be around a holiday. I arrived on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, thinking the holiday rush would be over. Well, I was wrong. I entered Allie’s and promptly got in line behind twenty other customers to pickup my Donut Cakes.

Don't let the popularity of Allie's scare you away. During busy times they have four employees working the counter to make sure you are in and out of there in quick fashion. They certainly have this whole process perfected, and this is undoubtedly one of the reasons for their success.

As was evident from the smiles at our birthday party, the two-hour drive was a small price to pay to bring home a Donut Cake. You only turn three once, after all.

I don’t know who came up with the idea of the Donut Cake. I had every intention of doing an impromptu interview but the crowd of customers made that impossible. I would imagine that the owner of Allie’s, maybe Allie, came up with the idea? No matter. They have a winner here no matter who came up with the Donut Cake creation.

Happy 3rd Birthday

I don’t know if the Donut Cake is available anywhere else in the country. If it’s not, it certainly should be. For me, I might be a little selfish, but I’m sure glad that they are located here in southern New England. And I’m sure glad my sister stumbled onto Allie’s many years ago.

If you would like to get your hands on a Donut Cake, I suggest you call Allie’s and order one ahead of time. They are limited to making 80 of these per day, and once they reach their limit, that’s it for the day.

If you want one for a holiday I would recommend calling at least a week in advance as holidays are a particularly busy time for Allie’s. Occasionally they do have a few Donut Cakes available in their display case, but if you want a specific design, you certainly should order in advance as the chances of them having exactly what you want on hand are slim.

The cost of a Donut Cake will run you anywhere from $12 to $20 depending on the design you want and toppings. When you consider the cost of a birthday cake from a bakery I think this is reasonable and a pretty good deal. And the smiles that it will generate are priceless. Allie’s is open Monday to Friday from 5 am until 3 pm. On weekends they are open from 6 am until 1 pm. They are located at 3661 Quaker Lane in North Kingstown (401-295-8036). In addition to making Donut Cakes, Allie's has a full selection of freshly made donuts to satisfy every taste.

Do yourself a favor and try a Donut Cake for your next celebration, I'm pretty certain that it will be a hit. It's one of those things that everyone should try at least once or twice. Enjoy.

Questions & Answers

Question: How much are Allie’s donut cakes?

Answer: Prices range from $12 to $20 depending on the design and the toppings you select. You should also order ahead of time as they only make so many daily.

Question: If I want to order a donut cake from Allie's Donuts, do I have to do so one year in advance?

Answer: On their Facebook page, Allie's Donuts suggests ordering six weeks in advance for a custom donut cake. One year in advance sounds a bit extreme, but they are very popular and also very good. I have driven two hours from western Massachusetts for donut cakes for special occasions.

Question: What are Allie’s Donuts hours?

Answer: Allies is open Tuesday to Friday from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. On Saturday and Sunday, their hours are 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. They are closed on Monday.

Question: Does Allie's Donuts make hockey player donut cakes? Can you have it dropped off at another location for pick up?

Answer: You will have to contact Allie's for answers to your questions. I would assume they can make a hockey player. As for picking up at another location, I would doubt it, but you can ask them.

That was so easy to read - loved it. I almost have one of those sort of songs that stick in your head now, and the song says "Donut cake, donut cake, donut cake." Lovely idea, great hub, and hats off to Allies for the idea and managing to make 80 or so a day. I wish they made them here in my town in South Africa - or maybe not - I'd get fat!

Thanks Suzie. It is one of those unique finds that is worth the trip. They are very talented at making the different designs and the kids go crazy over them. Not something I need to be eating every day but for special occasions it's great. Thanks as always for the support, votes, share, etc. Have a great day.

Hi Bill,

What a great find this place was! As you say, nothing special to look at but what a power house inside! Donut Cake sounds and looks so interesting. Loved the different designs, particularly the fish and dump trunk. A 2 hour drive there to pick up is pretty impressive so it must be well worth it. Congrats on another great review and if I lived there I would definitely check it out!! VU, Interesting, Useful Shared!!

Hi Jasmine. As they have gotten more popular over the last few years you definitely have to order them well in advance. They stick to their 80 per day quota, after that, no more Donut Cake! Glad you enjoyed it, many thanks for stopping by.

Bill De Giulio (author) from Massachusetts on November 26, 2012:

Hi Carol. We have a lot of fun whenever we have a party with a Donut cake. And I agree with you, it's great to see a small business get creative and be successful. Thanks for stopping by, have a great day.

What a fun place. Even though I most likely will not travel over 3000 miles I enjoyed seeing the photos. I love small businesses that get creative with fun ideas. Thanks for this hub...A nice smile early in the morning.

Hi Kristin. It's one of the things that is unique to our area here and it just really caught on with people. Allie's, while just a small mom and pop bakery has come up with something that just seems to appeal to people. And they have a knack for making them look so fun and upbeat. There is only one person I would have driven two hours for to pick up one of these, and that is my 3 year old grandson. The smiles on his face made it worth the effort.

Thanks so much for stopping by to read and comment.

Kristin Trapp from Illinois on November 25, 2012:

When I first read the title and saw the first donut cake picture I was thinking, why -why do we now have to have donut cakes? Isn't regular cake or mammoth decorated cookies enough? But then I read on and saw all the wonderful donut cake creations you have enjoyed from Allie's over the years. They must certainly be delicious since you've gone back over and over and are willing to make a two hour drive for one. It seems to me that the best places are often very unassuming like Allie's, so I'm sure this review will be very helpful to anyone wondering about their donuts AND donut cakes.
