From kids to adults, you can be sure that everyone will be grabbing one of these spooky homemade treats.

To celebrate the Halloween holiday, learn how to decorate a fun batch of pumpkin, ghost, and cat cupcakes. Read further to find a list of needed supplies and step-by-step directions for creating each easy-to-make cupcake design.

1. Pumpkin Cupcakes

If you need a batch of quick and easy cupcakes for a Halloween party, this pumpkin design is the way to go. No need to call a bakery when you can whip up these simple treats in no time. Below you will find a list of supplies and directions for how to decorate a batch of pumpkin cupcakes.

Supplies:

  • Cake mix
  • Cupcake wrappers
  • Orange colored icing
  • Green gum drops
  • Decorator tool or plastic bag

Directions:

  1. Bake your desired flavor of cake mix in the oven according to the directions on the package. Let cool before applying the icing.
  2. Make a batch of orange colored buttercream icing. With regular food coloring, you will need to add 3 drops of yellow and 2 drops of red. Repeat the drops if you desire a brighter shade of orange.
  3. Fill the decorator tool or plastic bag with the orange icing and swirl around each cupcake. When you reach the middle, continue to squeeze out the icing and slowly lift up to create the pumpkin shape. Top the center of each cupcake with a green gum drop and enjoy!

2. Ghost Cupcakes

If the pumpkins don't appeal to you, try these easy to make ghost cupcakes for your Halloween celebration. All you need is ghost-shaped marshmallow Peeps and plastic bat rings to create these spooky homemade treats. Below you will find a complete list of needed supplies and step-by-step decorating instructions.

Supplies:

  • Cake mix
  • Cupcake wrappers
  • Orange colored icing
  • Ghost marshmallow Peeps
  • Plastic bat rings
  • Decorator tool or plastic bag
  • Scissors

Directions:

  1. Bake the cupcakes in the oven according to the instructions on the cake mix package. Be sure that they are completely cool before frosting.
  2. Use a pair of scissors to cut off one-third of the bottom of the ghost marshmallow Peeps. This step is optional but I shorten the length to prevent the ghosts from falling over and to easily fit in my storage container.
  3. Frost the cupcakes with a decorator tool or plastic bag filled with orange colored buttercream icing. Push the ghost marshmallow into the center of the cupcake. Add a plastic bat ring to finish these spooky treats.

3. Cat Cupcakes

Our third cupcake design for your Halloween party is a spooky orange and black cat to greet your guests. These yummy treats are hard to resist with whiskers and ears made out of black licorice and mini marshmallows for the nose and eyes. Below you will find a supply list and easy to follow directions for creating this fun batch of cat cupcakes.

Supplies:

  • Cake mix
  • Cupcake wrappers
  • Orange colored icing
  • Black licorice
  • Mini marshmallows
  • Black decorator gel
  • Decorator tool or plastic bag
  • Scissors

Directions:

  1. Bake the cupcakes according to the directions given on the cake mix package. Once completely cool, frost them with a decorator tool or plastic bag filled with orange colored buttercream icing.
  2. Use a pair of scissors to cut 6 thin strips out of black licorice to make the whiskers. You will also need 2 triangles cut out of the licorice for the ears.
  3. Push 2 mini marshmallows into the icing for the eyes and one more for the nose. Insert the whiskers under the marshmallow nose and add the ears to the top of each cupcake. Add a drop of black decorator gel to the marshmallow eyes to finish the cat design.

Don't Have Black Decorator Gel?

If you don't have black decorator gel, use a toothpick dipped in black food coloring to add the center of the cat eyes. Be sure to lightly touch the marshmallow with the toothpick as it quickly absorbs and spreads the food coloring.
