Canned Tuna: Main Dish, Side Dish, Salad, and Snack Recipes

Canned tuna is not just a meal for a rainy (or lazy) day. It is very nutritious and can be used in a variety of dishes. I've already written an article on tuna sandwich recipe where I presented three different sandwich recipes using tuna. And today I'll be sharing more canned tuna recipes which you can use for variety of occasions and which are rather quick and easy to make. Let's get started...

Main Dish Recipes

1. Tuna Pasta Recipe with Tomatoes


  • 0.5 lbs (250 g) of penne pasta
  • 1 onion
  • 14 oz (3 cans) of tuna
  • 14 oz of canned tomatoes
  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil
  • fresh basil


  1. Cook penne pasta.
  2. Chop onion and fry it in olive oil until soft.
  3. Add sliced canned tomatoes to onion and cook for several minutes.
  4. Add tuna and torn basil. Warm everything a little bit.
  5. Add everything to pasta. Enjoy.

2. Tuna Pizza Recipe


  • 7 oz (1.5 cans) of tuna
  • pizza dough
  • 4 tablespoons of tomato paste
  • mozzarella cheese
  • olives


  1. Preheat the oven to 445 F (230 C).
  2. Put ready to use pizza dough on the aluminium foil and on the oven tray.
  3. Spread tomato paste on the dough.
  4. Spread shredded or thinly sliced mozzarella cheese.
  5. Put tuna and olives.
  6. Spread mozzarella cheese once again.
  7. Bake until golden brown.

3. Baked Eggplants with Canned Tuna


  • 2 eggplants
  • 2 cans of tuna
  • 3 tomatoes
  • 1 onion
  • 3 tablespoons of shredded cheese
  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil
  • margarine
  • bread crumbs
  • oregano
  • salt
  • pepper


  1. Heat the oven to 390 F (200 C).
  2. Cut eggplants in half and hollow them out (don't throw the flesh away!)
  3. Prepare the filling: heat olive oil on the frying pan and fry tuna, chopped onion and cut on small squares eggplant flesh. Add salt, pepper and oregano.
  4. Stuff hollowed eggplants with the filling.
  5. Prepare baking dish: put a little bit of margarine on the bottom, and slices of tomatoes.
  6. Put stuffed eggplants on the tomatoes in a baking dish and add bread crumbs on top.
  7. Put everything into the heated oven for 30 minutes.
  8. In 30 minutes take everything out and put shredded cheese on top of the eggplants.
  9. Put in the oven again and wait until cheese has golden crust.
  10. Serve hot.

Side Dish Recipes

4. Stuffed Mushrooms

This is one of those canned tuna recipes with which you can surprise your guests. It's not only delicious, but also looks wonderful. Double or triple the ingredients to get more portions of stuffed mushrooms.


  • 4 Portobello mushrooms
  • 4 oz (110 g) of couscous
  • 1 can of canned tuna
  • olive oil


  1. Heat the oven to 355 F (180 C).
  2. Cook couscous.
  3. Mix cooked couscous with tuna.
  4. Hollow out Portobello mushrooms.
  5. Brush mushroom heads with olive oil, fill in with couscous tuna mixture and bake for 15 minutes.

5. Mashed Potato with Canned Tuna


  • 14 oz (3 cans) of tuna
  • 4 oz (110 g) of mushrooms
  • 2 lbs (1 kg) of mashed potato
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon of tomato paste
  • dried herbs of your choice
  • 4 oz (110 g) of Cheddar cheese


  1. Preheat the oven to 355 F (180 C).
  2. Cut mushrooms and fry them in olive oil until soft.
  3. Put mushrooms into the baking dish, add tuna and tomato paste. Mix everything.
  4. Add spices and herbs of your choice.
  5. Put mashed potato on top and shredded Cheddar cheese on top of potato.
  6. Bake everything in the oven for 15 minutes.

Salad Recipes

6. Tuna Salad Recipe with Feta and Rice


  • 7 oz (1.5 cans) of canned tuna
  • 7 oz (200 g) of feta cheese
  • 12 cherry tomatoes
  • 3 spring onions
  • 10 oz (275 g) of cooked rice
  • 1 tablespoon of capers
  • 2 tablespoons of raisins
  • 4 tablespoons of French dressing


  1. Slice feta cheese on squares, slice cherry tomatoes and cut spring onion.
  2. Mix it with cooked (boiled) rice.
  3. Add tuna and capers.
  4. Add raisins and French dressing.
  5. Stir before serving. Enjoy.

7. Salad "Heart"

This is one of those canned tuna recipes which you definitely can use for a romantic dinner or for St. Valentine's Day. It's not only tasty but looks extremely beautiful.


  • 1 can of tuna
  • 1/3 of glass of rice
  • 1 can of corn
  • 1 cucumber
  • 1 red bell pepper
  • 1/4 of onion
  • mayonnaise
  • salt
  • pepper


  1. Mix tuna and corn together (without the liquid).
  2. Boil rice in salted water, and once ready, add it as well.
  3. Add chopped cucumber and onion.
  4. Add salt, pepper and mayonnaise. Mix everything.
  5. Shape the salad in form of a heart.
  6. Blend red bell pepper in blender.
  7. Press blended bell pepper to get rid of the juice and put a thick layer of it on top of the salad.
  8. You can decorate the salad with the nuts and dill.

8. Tuna Egg Salad with Potato and Green Beans


  • 1 can of tuna
  • 12 oz (250 g) of green beans (frozen)
  • 3 tomatoes
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 potatoes
  • 0.25 lbs (100 g) of blue cheese
  • 3 tablespoons of olive oil
  • dill


  1. Make the dressing: cut dill, mix with olive oil and leave for 30 minutes (the more, the better).
  2. Boil the green beans.
  3. Boil eggs and potatoes.
  4. Cut tomatoes, eggs, potatoes, shred cheese, mash tuna with the fork and mix everything together.
  5. Add dressing and mix once again. Enjoy.

Snacks Recipes

9. Tuna Roll (Mexican Style)


  • 1 green bell pepper
  • 1 red onion
  • 4 tablespoons of mayonnaise
  • chili spice
  • 14 oz (3 cans) of tuna
  • 1 can of kidney beans
  • 4 tortillas


  1. Chop bell pepper and onion.
  2. Mix mayonnaise with a pinch of chili spice, and add chopped pepper and onion to it.
  3. Add tuna and kidney beans.
  4. Mix everything and use as a filling to warm tortillas. Cut tortillas on small snack portions. Enjoy!

10. Tuna Dip


  • 7 oz (1.5 cans) of canned tuna
  • 2 tablespoons of mayonnaise
  • small pack of sour cream
  • dill
  • curry


  1. Mix mayonnaise with sour cream, add dill and curry, add tuna.
  2. Mix everything with fork and blend until everything is perfectly blended together.
  3. Cool and serve with crispy bread, carrot and celery.

        What great tuna recipes. I will certainly bookmark this page. I have never heard or thought of mixing tuna with mashed potatoes, but it sounds and looks delicious. I love tuna fish and it is so healthy and full of protein. Thanks for sharing your recipes with us.

        Tuna is always my favorite... I could never go wrong with it. The only other way I know in preparing a canned tuna-based dish (aside from tuna salad ) is the one with soy sauce with lots of onion rings. Thanks for your new ideas! :)

        We've got quite a lot of cans of of tuna (we've forgotten that we already have many) and aside from the usual tuna spread we just don't know what other things we might do with canned tuna.
