A Review of 6 Frozen Pizzas

Updated on December 17, 2017

Just a small note

This article will be an ongoing process, even though as I publish this, there are only four contenders listed.

Not all of these will be available in your location, although I am trying to pick the brands which I believe to be the most universal.

Costs will vary too: I live in California, so you may be able to get these cheaper where you live. But then again, even within my region, prices vary depending upon where you purchase the pizza or local bargain sales.

Digiorno's Pizza

Well this pizza had a lot of onions on it. I don't mind onions, but I don't want them in excess either, so I pulled some off.

The pizza cooked up nicely and came out looking with a nice golden glaze.

The crust was a little crispier than I liked and the sausage wasn't really spicy. I like my sauce to be a little more abundant. The peppers were a nice touch. See my rating below.

California Pizza Kitchen - the Works!

Cost: $5.99

Now I have never been to a California Pizza Kitchen and I remember when they first started becoming popular - about twenty or twenty-five years ago (the early 1990's).

They were popular, but I think the name had something to do with it and the fact that most of their restaurants appeared to be the kind where you went in and had a seat. That meant they were probably more expensive. Does that mean they were better?

Well, the pizza wasn't bad, but it certainly wasn't one of the best. A lot of their pizzas are thin crust versions - which I don't mind - but their crust tends to be kind of airy - like you chewing on air is what I mean.

The cheese is a bit sharp for my tastes. You can tell they use more than mozzarella. The toppings are not as generous as I would have expected either and the sauce is a bit sparse.

The pizza isn't bad, but for the price you are probably better off going to Tonito's or one of the cheaper brands that might be a little more filling. The one thing about California Pizza Kitchen brands though is that their flavors have a little more variety. You can get a white sauce mushroom pizza, a bar-be-q chicken variety and several others.

I took the combination because I like meat and vegetables on my pie and may try one of the other versions later.

Tombstone Pizza - Supreme!

Cost: $2.99 - $3.99

Probably one of the more affordable - higher end - frozen pizzas, Tombstone is quite satisfactory.

The crust is crisp and airy in just the right proportions. The sauce is fairly sweet and there is enough of it to add a zest to the pizza.

The problem with the supreme is that the toppings could be a little more generous. There were maybe ten olive slices and a few slivers of pepper. Plenty of onions - in fact I took some off. A few pieces of pepperoni and not enough sausage. Cheese was in adequate amounts and was fairly flavorful.

When I cooked the pizza, I cook it directly on the oven rack and it sort of warped a bit when I took it out. So when I cut it, a couple slices "broke". Not that big a problem.

I like my pizza a little well done - so that the cheese on top is a golden color and it cooked up nice. I didn't provide a photo of the nutritional information so I will try and find it online.

Overall, not bad - filling and tasty. Good enough for an informal party, or night in front of the television. Kids and young adults will probably like it because it isn't too complicated.

I also added crushed red pepper before cooking for a little zest...

Red Barron - Brick Oven Pizza

Cost: $3.50

An amazingly fresh, pizzeria like sample. This is by far one of my favorites and very affordable on top of that. The toppings are tasty, the crust delicious. Fragrant and golden brown, right out of the oven. The aroma of fine tomatoes with a hint of oregano when taken piping hot from the oven.

Red Barron is highly recommended and will leave your tease your taste buds with its fine texture. This is certainly one of the more authentic recipes that will satisfy your hungry appetite and fill your belly with a comfortable warmth.

Besides the authentic appearance and flavor, you will be dazzled by the sauce which has just the right amount of sweetness in it. The thick tomato flavor adds to the notion that this is probably one of the closest you'll come to restaurant style available in frozen.

Highly recommended.

Totino's Pizza - a Real Bartain

Cost: $1.29 - $1.99

One of my favorites actually, not only because it is economical, but it tastes pretty good.

I certainly wouldn't call it the best however, but it isn't bad. The portions are good enough for one person and make a great snack. You certainly cannot feed a family with it though.

The packaging as well as the shape of the pizza has changed quite a bit over the past couple of years. Previously, it was in a cardboard box and round. Now it is rectangular and wrapped in plastic like sheath.

The crust is crispy throughout and is quite delicious. There isn't much sauce, but it is flavorful and the toppings add a nice flavor. My personal favorite is the combination (pepperoni and sausage). They have a plain cheese, pepperoni, sausage or a supreme.

With the sausage you can taste little bits of oregano seed - which I like, but some people might have problems with their teeth or dental work because of this. The pepperoni isn't like the traditional kind. No slices, just squares.

As I said, not gourmet, but if you are looking for a tasty treat that is under two bucks, you can't go wrong.

For it's price, Totino's is a good choice.

Paul Newman's Own Thin & Crispy

Paul Newman's Own

Cost: $5.99 - $7.99

A quite refreshing alternative to the normal frozen pizzas out there. Even frozen, this specimen looks quite delicious. The toppings were evenly distributed.

It cooked in about ten minutes and while cooking, even bubbled up slightly the way you see pizzas do in a restaurant oven.

The thin crust was just right and the spices were flavorful. The pepperoni tasted fresh and the cheese was fragrant and delicious.

The sauce was one of the best I've had and the thin crust was crisp with just enough give to it.

Probably the best of the lot. A little more pricey, but definitely worth it. Very authentic
