How to Cook Ground Beef Stew Recipe

This is a ground beef recipe with step-by-step instructions and photos.

I show you how to cook the basic recipe, and then you can use it in a variety of dishes.


  • Preparation time: less than 5 mins
  • Cooking time: 45 mins
  • Serves: 6 to 8 depending on size of portions required


  • 1 ½ 1bs mince steak
  • 2 large onions
  • 1 medium size carrot
  • 2 large tomatoes
  • 1 bowl frozen peas
  • 1 Tablespoon tomato puree
  • Small amount gravy

Optional Extras

These vegetables should also be chopped up into small pieces.

  • 2 small mushrooms
  • ½ a small pepper
  • 4 green beans

Step 1

  1. Cut up the onions into fairly small pieces.
  2. Cut up the tomatoes into fairly small pieces.
  3. Grate the carrot.

Step 2

  1. Add the cooking oil and onions to the pot. Cook for approx one minute until the onions are brown.
  2. Add the grated carrot and the tomatoes.
  3. Keep back a quarter of the tomatoes.
  4. These will be added at the very end of cooking in order to keep their shape.
  5. Add any extra vegetables that you have decided to include.

Step 3

  1. Put the pot back on the cooker and mix in these vegetables for two minutes.
  2. Add the tomato puree and mix for another minute.
  3. Add the mince to the pot and mix well as it cooks.
  4. A wooden spoon is best to use for its strength.
  5. Cook for twenty minutes.
  6. Add the frozen peas and the remainder of the chopped tomatoes.
  7. Cook for a further 5 minutes.

Step 4

  1. Make up the gravy and stir this into the pot slowly and continuously until mixed in evenly.
  2. The amount of gravy used will depend on your preference for how you like the finished dish.

Total preparation and cooking time for this ground beef recipe is 45 minutes approximately.

This mince beef dish can now be used to make other variants of main meals.

      Thanks Peggy for your comment. Yes freezing freshly cooked food it so handy and healthier. I would always get a larger piece of meat to cook so that there is plenty to freeze as well. Saves on so much cooking time lol

      True drbj lol. I make sure to make enough of the dish so that there is a lot of it over and I can freeze it. It is so much easier to be able to take it out of the freezer and pop it in the microwave.
