Believe me when I say that this broccoli casserole is so easy to do that you can do it quickly in the afternoon after work with a kid on your arm—and at the same time, you can clean your home, read the news, unpack the dishwasher, help the older children with their homework, rearrange a meeting next week, and do your pelvic floor exercises! That is, if you don't grow your own broccoli.

As I have mentioned in other articles, I have the good fortune to be married to a chef, so the more complicated cooking is luckily not my responsibility. The few times when cooking falls on me, I often choose something I know how to do and/or something that doesn't take too long to make. You might have guessed by now that cooking isn't one of my biggest interests, but I love to eat good food. And I also want food that is healthy. This dish has it all, and it is convenient to prepare it in the oven so I can get other necessary things done at the same time! I guess we all have gotten used to doing many things at the same time in order to maximize the evening hours after work. I don't have small children anymore, but the rest of the chores are still there!

In Sweden, we call this dish broccoli gratin or broccoli låda (broccoli box)!

How to Serve Broccoli Casserole

Sometimes we need food that goes quick and easy to make, and we want it to taste good as well. This broccoli casserole has it all; it is easy, tasty and very quick to prepare! I use this broccoli casserole as a main dish if I add ham or bacon to the casserole. But the best way to use it is to substitute rice or potatoes in a meal. That is so convenient, especially when I have leftovers of meat, poultry, beef patties or something similar from the last day. Everyone in the family likes this, and you will have a healthy and complete meal with vegetables that is ready instantly!

Other Advantages

If you are lactose intolerant, use lactose-free milk instead of regular milk. The casserole can also be served to those who are gluten intolerant.

Another way to use this broccoli casserole is for those trying to lose weight by eating fewer carbohydrates because you can replace potatoes, pasta or rice with this casserole. If you are on a long-term diet that includes a high percentage of fat and low carbohydrates, you can make some small changes to the recipe and add some more fat and cheese to the casserole. Be careful with salt if you add bacon to the casserole.

Ingredients (4 Servings)


Frozen broccoli

400 grams


1 package, about 150-200 gram


4 eggs


2.1 cups (5 dL)

Salt, pepper

To taste


For the oven dish


  1. Set the oven to 200 °C or 392 °F.
  2. If you use fresh broccoli, let it cook for about 5 minutes in salted water. Pour it in a colander and let it drain.
  3. If you use frozen broccoli, you can just defrost it under warm water in a colander and let it drain.
  4. Fry the bacon crispy.
  5. Put the broccoli in a greased form 1-1,5 Litres.
  6. Sprinkle the fried bacon over the broccoli if you use bacon.
  7. Beat the eggs and add the milk. Season with salt and pepper.
  8. Pour the eggs and the milk on top of the broccoli and let it cook in the oven (200 °C) for 20-35 minutes. (The shorter time is if you have a low and wide form.)

For a LCHF variant, you can do some minor changes in the recipe, like in the table below:

Cottage cheese

Feta cheese

Pepper, oregano or basilika

Grated cheese

0.4 cup(1 dL)


Do the same steps as in the recipe above but mix the eggs with the creme instead of milk, and add the cheese to the mix before you pour it over the broccoli. Add the grated cheese on top and let it bake for about 20 minutes.


I really think that food should be cooked with love, and I prefer it when cooking involves everyone in the family. In my case, it means that my daughter and I assist my husband to create gastronomic experiences! We try to make dinners during weekends special, but during the week when everyone is busy and time is limited, I need this type of recipe if I am the chef.
