Sama lemon rice

Sama lemon rice

Regular rice is not permitted to be eaten during the fasting festivals, or vrat. Sama rice (barnyard millet), on the other hand, is on the list of permissible foods.

Today, we are preparing lemon rice with sama rice. It is a very simple yet very delicious dish you can serve on its own or with curd or any vrat chutney.

Try it and share your experience.

For boiling the sama rice:

  • 1 cup sama ke chawal/sama rice (barnyard millet), washed a few times and soaked in water for 30 minutes
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tsp desi ghee (clarified butter)
  • 1 tsp sendha namak (rock salt)

For the tadka (tempering):

  • 2 tbsp desi ghee or peanut oil
  • 1/4 cup raw peanuts
  • 2-3 sliced green chillies
  • 8-10 kaju (cashew nuts)
  • 20-25 kadi patta (curry leaves)
  • Pinch black pepper powder
  • 1 1/2 lemons

  1. Wash the sama rice a few times and then soak for 30 minutes. Strain out the water and set it aside.
  2. Add water to a wok. Keep the heat on high and let the water come to a boil. Add in the soaked sama rice, desi ghee and sendha namak. Stir well. Let the water come to a boil again.
  3. Cover with a lid, reduce the heat to low and cook until the rice is done. Check a couple of times in between. This should take 5-7 minutes. Transfer the sama rice to a large plate and spread it out. Let it completely cool down; then with a fork stir the rice to separate it.
  4. Keep a pan on low heat, add the desi ghee and let it get hot. Add the raw peanuts and sliced green chillies. Saute for 1 minute; then add the cashew nuts and saute until the peanuts are lightly roasted, about 2-3 minutes.
  5. Add the kadi patta and black pepper powder and mix. Add the boiled sama rice into the pan and mix well again for about 1 minute.
  6. Put off the heat, squeeze the lemon juice on the top and mix again.
  7. Sama lemon rice is ready to be served.
