Costco Is Opening a New Concept Store and Fans Aren't Sure What to Think
Costco has made some pretty big changes over the last few months, and now it seems they may be trying an entirely new approach- a new store concept that will limit what they sell.
The new warehouse store will still be full of beloved Costco items, but some notable things will be missing while others will have more selection. The news was shared on the decorating site Apartment Therapy, and fans of the warehouse retailer aren't sure what to think about this new idea.
Costco Will Cut Out the Groceries in New Concept
It's no secret that Costco is known for its food court, amazing grocery selection, and fresh-made foods like cakes and pies that fans can't get enough of. So when the retailer said it was cutting all that out of its new store concept, Costco members were confused.
Larger items, like furniture and appliances, are often sold on the store's website, but not always found in-store. That may be changing, though, as the retail giant tests out a showroom concept that is solely focused on selling furniture and appliances. This is something a lot of Costco shoppers can get behind, but it will only be offered in one fairly remote place for now- Alaska.
The new concept store will open in a former Toys R Us in Anchorage, Alaska. Apartment Therapy reports that the permits for the store are pending, so it doesn’t have an official opening date yet.
Christine Lasley, a director of real estate with Costco, told the Anchorage Daily News in Alaska that Costco is going in this direction to meet the needs of its members, allowing people the chance to see what they’re buying before they purchase it, which is not something they can do when ordering online. This will also serve businesses that purchase items in bulk.
Costco tested a similar store in Kirkland, Washington, close to Costco headquarters. That location closed in 2009.
People Are Talking
Costco has made some big changes this year, with new food court items, the way it checks memberships, and even who it allows to eat at the food court. A thread on Reddit already has members voicing opinions and making speculations about the new concept.
Some say that this is the perfect place to try out this type of store because it is in such a remote that has limited access to big items, like furniture, refrigerators, and dishwashers, which is what the store would carry. Others are excited to see it expand to larger markets because shopping online for some items isn't easy.
Everyone pretty much agreed that this could be a game-changer for Costco, and we can't wait to see where it goes.
